With the Braves in the midst of a frenzied push for the playoffs, Derrek Lee did his best hitting of 2010 in the final month of the season. And he did it while playing through a torn ligament in his thumb, Atlanta general manager Frank Wren told reporters Thursday.
A similar injury to Jason Heyward landed the rookie outfielder on the disabled list earlier this year. Lee's ligament tear was more severe, but he kept playing.
Acquired from the Cubs on Aug. 18 for three minor leaguers, Lee hit .304 with a .915 OPS in regular season games in September and October -- easily his most productive month of the season. He sustained the thumb injury early in September, Wren said.
