The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim moved to become faster, younger and more adept defensively on Sunday night when they told Triple-A outfielder Peter Bourjos he's being promoted.Bourjos will join the team at its hotel in Baltimore on Monday, FanHouse has learned.
With Salt Lake City, Bourjos hit .314 with 13 home runs, 12 triples and 13 doubles. In 102 games, he has scored 85 runs and has 27 stolen bases in 32 attempts to go with a .364 on-base percentage.
Angels GM Tony Reagins told FanHouse last Monday that Bourjos has "opened up a lot of eyes throughout baseball" with his hitting rampage of late.
In July, Bourjos batted .438 with six home runs and a .474 on-base percentage. Reagins said Bourjos, a right-hander, has improved his hitting by focusing more on driving the ball up the middle.
As it was, Bourjos was known to a lot of clubs for his excellent defense in center field. "He made some plays in Triple-A that a lot of major leaguers would not make," said a veteran scout from the NL West who saw Bourjos earlier this year.
Center fielder Torii Hunter is blocking Bourjos in Anaheim, so it appears Bourjos will see some time in left field, where he has played recently with Salt Lake City.
