There aren't that many pressing questions surrounding a team that is leading the World Series two games to zero. But, as is always the case in the baseball, there are indeed questions in one form or another. The biggest one for the San Francisco Giants, as the scene shifts to Arlington, Texas, was who would serve as the designated hitter. Bruce Bochy answered that question after the Giants workout on Friday by picking Pablo Sandoval.
With that one crossed off, we move to the next one on my list: Which Jonathan Sanchez will we see on the mound in Game 3?
The pitcher with dominant, no-hit stuff, or the maddeningly inefficient pitcher who couldn't get out of his own way against the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6 of the NLCS?
The line for Sanchez on that evening was 2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 50 pitches (24 strikes)
With a chance to eliminate Philadelphia and avoid a Game 7, Bruce Bochy was motivated to use a quick hook. He also had the luxury of a deeper bullpen with Madison Bumgarner and Tim Lincecum available in relief. He won't have those options tonight.
Sanchez reiterated several times during his media session on Friday that he has put that performance behind him. That sounds good, but what happens if Texas applies a little pressure to him early? Does he right himself as he did in Game 2 against Philly, or does he make it two straight clunkers?
Or maybe he hits the ground running and dominates the Texas Rangers from start to finish.
