Fredi Gonzalez Officially Takes Reins From Bobby Cox in Atlanta

In perhaps the least suspenseful managerial hiring in memory, Fredi Gonzalez officially took over as manager of the Atlanta Braves Wednesday afternoon, mere minutes after his predecessor and mentor Bobby Cox finished his farewell press conference.

Gonzalez and Cox were side-by-side at a Turner Field news conference as Gonzalez was introduced as the legendary manager's replacement. Braves general manager Frank Wren said Gonzalez was the only candidate interviewed for the job, and that he was the man Atlanta had in mind all along.

Gonzalez was fired by the Marlins in June after compiling a 276-279 record in 3 1/2 seasons there. He had previously served as Cox's third base coach in Atlanta for four seasons after one year managing the Braves' Triple-A team. Even if the Marlins hadn't cut him loose, Gonzalez would have been the odds-on favorite to replace Cox.
