A's Get Josh Willingham From Nationals

Josh WillinghamThe Oakland Athletics made their second big move of the week to upgrade their offense, acquiring outfielder Josh Willingham from the Nationals to the A's in exchange for reliever Henry Rodriguez and outfielder Corey Brown.

Earlier this week, Oakland announced the signing of designated hitter Hideki Matsui. With him and now Willingham in the fold, general manager Billy Beane would appear to have taken two giant steps toward improving an offense that dragged down the A's chances of contending in the AL West.

Oakland ranked 11th in runs in the American League last year and second-to-last in homers. Willingham, meanwhile, hit .268 with 16 homers and 56 RBI in 114 games this past season -- one that was cut short by a knee injury that eventually required surgery.
