Rob JohnsonRob Johnson, who began the 2010 season as the Seattle Mariners' top catcher, was designated for assignment by the club Monday with Seattle needing to make room on the 40-man roster for DH Jack Cust.

The Mariners struck a deal with Cust on a one-year, $2.75 million contract last week but didn't need to make room on the roster until Monday.

Seattle now has 10 days to trade, release or send Johnson to the minor leagues.

The 28-year-old played the 2010 season after having surgery on both hips and a separate surgery on his left wrist at the end of the 2009 season. He came back in spring training, but he was never quite the same either defensively -- which is his strength -- or offensively.
