The Atlanta Braves acquired relief pitcher Scott Linebrink on Friday and sent minor-league pitcher Kyle Cofield to the Chicago White Sox in return.The 34-year-old Linebrink was 3-2 with a 4.40 ERA in 52 games for the White Sox in 2010. He recorded 52 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings and ranked third among White Sox relievers in innings pitched. Opposing hitters managed a .262 batting average against Linebrink, but he was decidedly better when he was forced, or pitched himself into, jams.
He held opposing hitters to a .203 (15-for-74) batting average with runners in scoring position and posted a .083 (1-for-12) opponent's average with the bases loaded.
With Billy Wagner, the Braves' closer in 2010, retired, the team has a lot of youth at the back end of its bullpen. The 25-year-old Jonny Venters and the 22-year-old Craig Kimbrel have just one year of major league experience each, after fantastic rookie campaigns. Linebrink could bring a much-needed voice of wisdom to the young group.
