The Pirates signed first baseman Lyle Overbay to a one-year contract, the team announced Tuesday. Overbay will reportedly make $5 million.Overbay returns to the NL Central, where he spent two years with the Brewers prior to the last five seasons in Toronto. He'll be expected to provide some pop in the middle of Pittsburgh's order after posting 37 doubles, two triples and 20 homers for the Blue Jays last season. He led the majors with 53 doubles back in 2004 for the Brewers.
"Lyle Overbay is a solid major league player and we expect him to have a positive impact on our club offensively, defensively and in the clubhouse," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said in a statement.
Pittsburgh has been stockpiling low-cost veterans so far this winter, previously agreeing to deals with pitchers Scott Olsen and Kevin Correia and outfielder Matt Diaz.
