The Dodgers added an infielder and subtracted another Tuesday, officially signing free agent Juan Uribe and trading Ryan Theriot to the Cardinals for pitcher Blake Hawksworth.Uribe's three-year, $21 million deal became official after he passed a physical. He figures to slot in at various infield positions for new manager Don Mattingly, just as he did in 2010 for the rival Giants. Uribe started 103 games at shortstop, 26 games at third base and 24 games at second base this season, so the Dodgers will have flexibility in how they fill out their lineup each day.
And of course there's his bat. Uribe posted career highs with 24 homers and 85 RBI in 2010 and came up big in a few key situations in the playoffs.
"Juan provides us with a big bat in the middle of the infield and can change a game with one swing," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said in a statement. "His versatility is a huge asset, as he can play second base, third base and shortstop and he's a two-time World Champion, so he knows what it takes to win."
