The Rockies have a fever and the only prescription is more contract extensions. On the heels of their big deals with Jorge De La Rosa and Troy Tulowitzki, the Rockies have now set their sights on locking up the futures of Carlos Gonzalez and Ubaldo Jimenez. General manager Dan O'Dowd used the announcement of Tulo's deal as an opportunity to let everyone know that he's reached out to Gonzalez and Jimenez about drawing up new contracts.
You can expect the Gonzalez talks to be non-starters. He's repped by Scott Boras, a man who would sooner infect his own home with bedbugs than allow one of his clients to give up a shot at free agency by signing an extension with his current club. That's probably just as well for the Rockies. You might as well see if he can repeat his spectacular 2010 before deciding to pay him like an established superstar.
