The St. Louis Cardinals know exactly what they want for Christmas: Albert Pujols under their tree for the rest of his career. They aren't going to settle for just asking Santa Claus, however. It's not a question of naughtiness, just the fact that the chance of putting a bow on Pujols lies on some serious discussions between the two sides about years and money due to a player who is essential to the franchise's future plans. The team plans to start negotiations with their star player when the calendar flips to December.
"Timing is important," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "We don't want it to drag out this winter. I wouldn't say it's at a critical juncture right now, but I'd like to think between now and the Christmas holiday we'd start addressing it."
