A piece from one of the most historic events in sporting history is now for sale.In Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, a hobbled Kirk Gibson pinch hit in the ninth inning against Oakland's Dennis Eckersley. Barely able to walk to the plate, Gibson slugged the game winning walk-off home run as the ever-famous Jack Buck announced, "I don't believe what I just saw." Now that bat is for sale.
The bat is being auctioned off by the current Arizona Diamondbacks manager. In addition to the famous bat, a batting helmet, his home and road uniforms, his World Series trophy and Most Valuable Player award from that season will also be auctioned.
Proceeds from the sale will support the Kirk Gibson Foundation that will help fund partial scholarships at the two high schools where Gibson's parents taught. They will also aid Michigan State University athletics, Gibson's alma mater.
