Cliff Lee Could Beat Yankees Before Joining Them

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- New York fans weren't all that torn up when the Yankees didn't get Cliff Lee at the trade deadline. No problem. They'd just sign him when the season's over.

Sorry, New York. That could be six months too late.

The Rangers snatched Lee on July 9, a day that could live in Yankees infamy. Couldn't the Yankees have thrown in Phil Hughes or Robinson Cano or the Metropolitan Museum of Art?

No price seems too high right now, because New York will now have to face the best playoff pitcher of the modern era. Lee confirmed that status Tuesday night with a typically eye-rubbing performance.
