Andrew Bailey, the reigning Rookie of the Year and a two-time All-Star, has been temporarily shut down with an elbow problem, and he'll travel to see noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews.Normally, the words "Tommy John surgery" would follow Andrews name and mention of an elbow injury, but the A's aren't at that point yet. First of all, Bailey already had Tommy John surgery, while he was in college. Second, Bailey described a similar discomfort in spring training, and it was diagnosed as tendinitis and missed only a couple weeks.
"We just want to be cautious with this," Bailey told reporters after the A's game on Monday night. "It's nothing to do with the inside of my elbow, if nothing else. ... It's been a little off and on, and the last outing, it sparked up a little more. We'll see what Dr. Andrews says."
That said, it would not be a surprise if the A's just shut him down for the final two weeks of the season, as a precaution.
Bailey has emerged as one of the top young closers in baseball. During his two full seasons, he has 51 saves, a 1.70 ERA and a WHIP of 0.91.
