When the Cubs announced that they were sticking with Mike Quade as their manager on Tuesday, a lot of people wondered what that would mean for Ryne Sandberg. The Hall of Fame second baseman has been managing in the minor leagues for four years, ostensibly because he was preparing himself to move into the dugout at Wrigley Field when Lou Piniella moved off into the sunset. Now that he's been passed over -- twice, if you want to include the in-season choice of Quade -- where does Sandberg go next?
Cubs general manager Jim Hendry says that he doesn't need to go anywhere.
"He is certainly welcome to return to Iowa; we think he did a great job there," Hendry said. "This was a very tough decision and one that I tossed and turned over. However, I love Ryne Sandberg and have tremendous respect for him."
