There have been some reports to the contrary, but the Angels are interested in having Adrian Beltre play third base for them next season. They aren't interested in being used by Scott Boras to find Beltre extra years and/or dollars on the contract the free agent eventually signs this offseason, however. That's the only conclusion to draw from their decision to publicly pull their offer to Beltre off the table on Tuesday. The offer was believed to be in the neighborhood of five years and $70 million, well below what Boras and Beltre were looking for on the open market.
How do we know that pulling the offer isn't a sign that the Angels are moving on to other things? Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports that a source told him that the Angels "have not shut any doors" on Beltre. All in all, it seems like a wise negotiating position.
