Kerry Wood will return to the Chicago Cubs in 2011, the team officially announced Friday.Wood, who passed a physical on Thursday, has agreed to a one-year deal reportedly worth a base salary of $1.5 million to return to the team that originally drafted him.
Since converting to relief full-time in 2007, the right-hander has posted a 3.52 ERA and limited opposing hitters to a .219 average. He also has experience closing, both for the Cubs and Indians. He finished the season as a setup man with the Yankees, going 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA after a trade deadline deal that sent him from Cleveland to New York.
Those credentials as a reliever underscore just what a sweetheart deal Wood signed to return to the team with which he burst onto the scene in 1998 -- most famously striking out 20 hitters as a 20-year-old in his fifth career major league start.
