Nick Punto, the scrappy utilityman personified, will have a new home in 2011. The Cardinals announced Friday they have signed the infielder to a one-year deal.Punto will make $750,000, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The Twins already paid him $500,000 to buy out his 2011 option.
Punto spent the last seven years with the Twins, slotting in as needed for manager Ron Gardenhire at second base, third base and shortstop. He presumably will do the same in St. Louis, with his versatility sure to come in handy when Tony La Russa feels the need to double-switch late in games.
The 33-year-old was slowed by hamstring injuries in 2010, landing on the disabled list twice. He ended up playing in only 88 games for Minnesota, hitting .238 and posting a .615 OPS.
Punto essentially takes the place of Brendan Ryan, who was traded to Seattle in December.
