Injuries have always been a part of baseball, but in the case of the A's Eric Chavez, that's been stretched to a point of absurdity. From 2000-2006, Chavez played in a minimum of 125 games -- five times playing 150 or more games -- while winning six Gold Gloves at third base and getting MVP votes in four different seasons.
Since then, not so much. He hasn't played 100 games in a season since and has played the equivalent of one full season -- 154 games -- in the last four years. That's what neck and shoulder injuries will do to you.
He's played in 33 games this year (.234, one homer, 10 RBI), and that's the most he's played in three years.
Chavez is still only 32, but he's had what should have been the prime years of his productivity stripped away from him. No player his age who wants to play and has the talent to play should be entertaining thoughts of retirement, but he is.
