Kevin Youkilis Preparing to Play Third Base in 2011

Filed under:

Kevin YoukilisKevin Youkilis's 2010 season may have ended just as August began, but he's been getting his injured thumb back in shape over the last couple of weeks and he's doing it with an eye on moving back across the diamond to third base.

With Adrian Beltre hitting free agency, there's a chance the Red Sox sign or trade for a first baseman instead of getting a third baseman through free agency, and if that happens, Youkilis wants to be ready to shift back to his original position.

"I'm preparing myself to play third base because if you prepare yourself to play third base and you play first, it's an easy transition," Youkilis told WEEI Tuesday morning.

That shouldn't be terribly hard for Youkilis, who played mostly third base in the minors and logged 63 games there in 2009 while Mike Lowell was injured.
