Padres Officially Sign Brad Hawpe

The Padres have found their replacement for Adrian Gonzalez, if not for his productivity with the bat.

The team announced Monday that they agreed to terms with Brad Hawpe on a one-year deal that's been rumored to be in the works for some time.

Financial terms were not part of the announcement, but they don't figure to be all that large for a player who found himself unemployed in the middle of last season when the Rockies released him. He was eventually signed by the Rays, for whom he hit .179 in 39 at-bats.

It was a precipitous fall from grace for Hawpe. From 2006-09 he posted a 124 OPS+ and hit 99 home runs for the Rockies, but 2010 brought no such success. He hit .255 with a .776 OPS in 103 games with the Rockies and got released when the team couldn't find a trading partner for his services in August.
