Albert Pujols, Cardinals Resume Talks

Will the new year bring a new contract in St. Louis for Albert Pujols? The Cardinals would like to think so.

The two parties have resumed negotiations this week and talks have been "positive" to date, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The word comes from anonymous sources, as Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak and Pujols' agent Dan Lozano have pledged to keep talks confidential.

Though the Cardinals made a run last winter at a new deal for Pujols, the sense of urgency is much higher this time around. Pujols already has said he will not negotiate after he reports to spring training, and that date is about six weeks away. Mozeliak and Lozano met twice last month during the Winter Meetings.

Pujols is entering the final year of a deal he signed in 2004 and will make $16 million after the Cardinals exercised their option on him days after last season ended. Wherever Pujols signs next, his salary will blow that figure out of the water.
