The Mariners made a handful of changes in Thursday, signing left-handed pitcher Erik Bedard and infielder Josh Wilson to contracts, trading Jose Lopez to Colorado for right-handed pitcher Chaz Roe and declining to tender a contract off to left-handed pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith.Right-handed pitchers David Aardsma and Brandon League and lefty Jason Vargas all were tendered contracts.
The signing of Bedard (pictured at right) will give the Mariners one more shot at getting some production out of the veteran left-hander. He has made just 30 starts in three years with Seattle, none of them last year when his comeback attempt was derailed by the need for season-ending shoulder surgery.
The contract came after the club turned down the $8 million option it had on Bedard's services for 2011. The Mariners signed Bedard last offseason after he'd had surgery on his left shoulder midway through the 2009 season.
