Bill Lajoie, a longtime baseball scout and executive who helped assemble one of the most dominant teams in modern history, the 1984 Detroit Tigers, has died at age 76.

Lajoie spent more than 50 years in the game, from his days as a minor league outfielder to his final job as a senior advisor to Pirates general manager Neal Huntington the last two seasons.

But he is best known for his work with the Tigers. He was named general manager in Detroit in 1984 and in his first season oversaw a team that got off to a 35-5 start and finished 104-58 in the regular season before cruising to a World Series title.
