Dan Uggla grew up a Braves fan in Tennessee, so simply being traded to Atlanta from Florida was a big enough deal to him.Now he'll have the added bonus of long-term security after making official a contract extension that makes him the highest-paid second baseman ever.
The Braves held a news conference Thursday at Turner Field to formalize Uggla's new five-year, $62 million deal. The average annual value of $12.4 million moves him past the Phillies' Chase Utley ($12.14 million annually on a seven-year, $85 million deal) among the position's elite.
"I just think it's life-changing for my family -- everybody is going to be taken care of now," Uggla told reporters Thursday. "That's the most important thing for me, and being close to home. So it's a very exciting day for the Uggla family."
