The Yankees added some outfield depth Wednesday, acquiring Justin Maxwell from the Nationals for right-hander Adam Olbrychowski.Washington had designated Maxwell for assignment last week, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for free agent reliever Todd Coffey.
The 27-year-old saw action in 67 Nationals games last season, doing next to nothing at the plate (.144 average, .594 OPS) and seeing most of his time as a defensive replacement and pinch-runner. A native of the D.C. area, Maxwell was the Nationals' fourth-round pick in 2005 out of the University of Maryland.
Olbrychowski, 25, spent most of 2010 with Class A Tampa but also made two appearances for Double-A Trenton. Overall, he went 3-2 with a 3.90 ERA in 32 appearances.
The Yankees cleared a roster spot for Maxwell by designating outfielder Jordan Parraz for assignment.
