The Reds have become the latest team to lock up a young franchise cornerstone long-term, reportedly agreeing to a six-year contract with Jay Bruce that will pay the outfielder at least $51 million. The deal, reported by ESPN.com, also includes a $12 million team option for a seventh year, a partial no-trade clause and several awards bonuses. Bruce, 23, is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter as a "Super Two" player. He made $440,000 last year.
Cincinnati's first-round pick in the 2005 draft, Bruce really established himself in 2010. He hit .281 with 25 homers, 70 RBI and an .846 OPS while playing solid defense in right field. Most memorable, though, was the walk-off home run he hit Sept. 28 against the Astros to give the Reds the NL Central title (watch video here).
His is the second multi-year deal the Reds have handed out to one of their own this winter. They gave Bronson Arroyo a three-year extension a week ago. There have been reports the Reds are also trying to lock up Joey Votto on a long-term deal.
