Steve Boros, a former major league infielder who went on to manage the Oakland A's and San Diego Padres, has died. He was 74.

Boros had wide-ranging experience in baseball as a player, manager and executive. The Michigan native broke in with the Tigers in 1957 and also saw action for the Cubs and Reds through 1965. He went on to manage in the minors and serve as a coach for the Royals and Expos before getting his big shot in Oakland.

Boros posted identical 74-88 records in his two full seasons as a major league manager -- 1983 with the A's and 1986 with the Padres. He also started the 1984 season 20-24 before being fired by Oakland. After his stint with the Padres, he coached again with the Royals and also the Orioles before joining the Tigers' player development staff in 1996.
