Trade Rumors Swirl Around Matt Garza as Cubs Maintain Interest

Rumors have persisted throughout the offseason that the Rays might be motivated to trade one of their starters, with Matt Garza the most likely to depart. And for just about as long, the Cubs have been connected to a potential Garza deal.

Early Wednesday, the Chicago Sun-Times cited a source saying the Cubs were "close" to trading for Garza, especially in light of the Rangers -- another rumored Garza suitor -- laying out nearly $100 million to sign Adrian Beltre. A bit later Wednesday morning, however, ESPN's Buster Olney reported a Garza deal was more likely to come in July than during the offseason.

It should be noted that Rays manager Joe Maddon insisted during the Winter Meetings that Garza would be in the Rays' rotation in 2011, for what that's worth. But general manager Andrew Friedman isn't afraid to make a bold move -- like the deal that brought Garza (and Jason Bartlett) to Tampa Bay in the winter of 2007 in exchange for a package headed by Delmon Young.
